digitize wood presented the innovative research buildings of the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC – the Hybrid Flax Pavilion and Wangen Tower as well as the IntCDC Building, which is due to be completed by 2027 on the Vaihingen campus – as part of the trade fair at the 46th Fachtagung Holzbau (Timber Construction Conference) on 17.09.2024.
The Fachtagung Holzbau took place for the 46th time on September 17 with over 300 participants, 30 exhibitors and 12 speakers. The industry event is aimed at architects, engineers and specialist planners interested in timber construction in the southwest of Germany. Lighthouse projects such as the “Roots” in Hamburg's HafenCity or the GBG timber house FRANKLIN in Mannheim were presented. The programme was organized by proHolz Baden-Württemberg and Biberach University of Applied Sciences and offered exciting insights into the latest innovations in timber construction. The Fachtagung Holzbau was accompanied by a trade fair.
Peter Hauk from the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection BW addressed the participants with an urgent welcome address: “We need a planning and building culture that thinks in cycles and tackles climate change.” And: “With timber construction, we are right in the middle of it. It is immediately applicable, scalable and feasible.”
Prof. Uwe Sachse from the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences provided insights into the “Zukunftskompass 2050”. The study looks at current and future tools and trends in sustainable value creation in the forestry and timber industry – from forest monitoring and ESG data platforms to digital twins and “carbon currency”.
Frank Hettler from Zukunft Altbau used the “fossil staircase” to show ways in which we can become independent of fossil fuels by 2045 and explained current requirements for energy modernization.
The “Roots” project in Hamburg's HafenCity is a 19-storey timber high-rise with 181 apartments, exhibition rooms and the administration of the German Wildlife Foundation. Uta Meins from Störmer Murphy and Partners GbR, Andreas Wemmer from Assmann Beraten und Planen GbR, Lisa Ansel from Hahn Consult GmbH and Oliver Fried from Rubner Holzbau presented the flagship project.
Hermann Kaufmann from HK Architekten presented exemplary projects in timber construction and pointed out the importance of a separate way of thinking for timber construction. Dr. Patricia Hamm from Biberach University of Applied Sciences explained the topic of vibrations of ceilings in timber construction with a view to the new EC5.
Leonhard Grosswendt from Motorlab Architekten and André Badstieber from bauart Ingenieure presented the GBG timber house FRANKLIN in Mannheim – a four-storey residential building with 32 residential units, in which as much wood as possible was to be used in the supporting structure.
In the afternoon, Carmen Mundorff from the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects presented the winning projects of the Baden-Württemberg Timber Construction Award 2024. Juri Troy from juri troy architects Vienna / TU Vienna concluded the program with his keynote speech “Timber construction – holistically different”.
